Why Silk?
I've often seen fifers carrying their instruments around in bags made of mattress ticking, flannel, cotton and other materials. They have no padding, offer little protection and after a bit of wear, the bottom can drop out, damaging the ferrules of the fife or even causing it to become lost. There are recorded cases of handerchiefs made from silk - Nature's fabric - being capable of stopping a high-speed bullet! It is strong and rugged! Ounce for ounce, silk is stronger than steel! This is the material that was used for many years in making parachutes, yet it is so smooth that it can't ever scratch anything.
Designed
by me, the BeAFifer Fife Bag is large enough to hold as many as 3 - 4 fifes of
up to 17 inches in length and can also hold two pairs of snare drum sticks. Well-padded
for protection, it is fabricated from a sturdy grade of expensive genuine silk
fabric not commonly available, assembled in three plies with a silk lining, available
in a neutral gold color or in dark gray. The bag has a Velcro closure on its flap
and a wide belt loop on the back, making it perfect for any time you are out of
uniform: rehearsals, musters or just jamming. It also provides you with a
place to stow your fife(s) when you aren't performing. The loop will fit on a
belt up to 3-1/2 inches wide and the bottom of the bag is reinforced with soft
fleece to minimize wear.
